SHAH ALAM: Free wireless Internet access and a better
 public transportation system
were among requests made by university students
 in their Budget 2012 wishlist.

Law student Mohd Zamre Mohd Zahir, 25,
said the free WiFi service in his campus was
only available at certain areas like cafeterias and libraries.

“There's no connectivity in our hostel rooms,
so if we want to go online in our rooms
we need to subscribe to mobile broadband services.
We have to spend about RM90
a month in subscription fee for that,” said
the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) post-graduate student.

Stephanie Alau Apui, 24, hopes the Government
either maintains the price of petrol, or
invests money saved on petrol subsidies to
 improve public transportation.

“Public transportation is still not entirely reliable
and my parents got me a car.
But it also means a chunk of my allowance
 goes to petrol,” said Stephanie,
who is also a post-graduate student at UiTM.

In George Town, Dwane Chin, 24, hoped the
Government would give education a wider
 perspective.
“I hope the allocation for education will include funding for cultural
 student exchange programmes
 because
such experiences are important to widen our
knowledge of the world,” he said.

N.P. Evareesa, 19, called for matriculation schools
for non-bumiputras to be established as not
everyone could afford the fees imposed by private institutions.

“An institution similar to Mara for bumiputras would be in line with the 1Malaysia spirit,” said
the mass communications student.

Her coursemate S. Jeyaranjenee, 21, and nursing student Chin Mei Mei, 20,
are hoping for books to be cheaper.
“A book subsidy of RM500 would really help,” Jeyaranjenee said.
